Let's face it we can't be on high alert 24x7. Nightmare scenario. Your vacation rental guest arrives in the middle of the night, and is stuck on the front porch unable to remember the combination. How could this have been avoided? Good communication and setting clear expectations.

When we provide directions to a vacation rental guest, we ask them to respond with their best estimate of time of arrival. If we don't hear back from them, we follow-up and try and get that estimated time of arrival. We reinforce clearly to them that it is in their best interest to let us know, because we want to be doubly sure that we'll be by the phone. We want them to understand that we're a regular family that happens to rent out our vacation home, and we don't have people that will answer the phone for us.
